Bingham Family Vineyards

Downtown Grapevine boasts some wonderful spots to shop, have a meal, and drink good wine.  Next time you're out that way, be sure to stop in at the Bingham Family Vineyards tasting room, a quaint little place with amazing people and really wonderful wines.  Davalyn and I stopped in for a taste just after things started opening back up and boy are we glad we did.  Jenn and Robin treated us like royalty, spent time talking about the Binghams' love for music - everyone, children included, trained on a string instrument - and family (their logo says it all), and how they grew their business by making some incredible wines.  They were great girls to spend a couple hours with.

Our tasting began with the 2018 Roussanne, a lighter white wine that smelled and tasted faintly of pear. This easy white is a nice sipper and perfect for a warm summer day by the pool or at the lake with friends. We tried their best-selling white next, the Cloudburst. With strong hints of citrus, grapefruit, and pear, this blend gives plenty of bang for your buck.

Next we tried Bingham's flagship red, the Dirt Farmer, a rich, plum-colored blend that smelled and tasted of smoked cherry. This wine was light in the mouth and the cherry definitely lingered awhile, finishing quickly and not overly dry.

The Tempranillo followed, and did not disappoint. It was rich and red in color, with hits of cinnamon, caramel, and nut on the nose.  Its easy smoothness really opened up nicely, and giving it a little swirl and some air enhanced that cinnamon flavor until it tapered off nicely, leaving you with nothing but the desire for another sip.

Finally, we reached Bingham's Bordeaux-style blend, the Dugout. This lovely had a deep, bright cranberry color with a hint of red towards the edge, and its dusty, earthy smell was like being outside after a good, long rain.  Its flavors boast deep berry fruit and smoky, rich wooded cherry, and it was so savory, thick on the tongue, with a really creamy texture.  The Dugout finished dry and flavorful - by far my favorite of the day.  I snagged a bottle to bring home for a special occasion - you know, a Tuesday!

Given these tastings and the varietals that go into this family's wines, it was no surprise to know that Bingham has vineyards in several parts of Texas and tasting rooms in Grapevine and Fredericksburg.  They also sell their grapes to other wineries, which seems to me a little like making and keeping a legacy all across our great state.  So whether you're in Grapevine or Fredericksburg, be sure to stop in and have a sampling of their offerings - currently they're pouring menu is limited and you'll need to call ahead for a reservation, but as we come back from the COVID restrictions, you'll be able to try everything - I know I can't wait to go back and see what's been in the tank!

Cheers, y'all!
